How business days are counted
A business day is any Monday through Friday that isn't a US federal holiday. This calculator has two modes. Days between two dates counts calendar days (every day in the range), weekdays (Monday-Friday only), and business days (weekdays minus any federal holidays that fall in the range) — with checkboxes to exclude holidays and to include or exclude the end date. Add/subtract business days starts from a date and steps forward or backward one calendar day at a time, only counting a step once it lands on a business day, which is exactly how deadlines like "file within 10 business days" or "respond within 5 business days" are calculated.
Federal holidays that fall on a weekend are observed on the nearest weekday: a holiday landing on Saturday is observed the preceding Friday, and one landing on Sunday is observed the following Monday. For example, Independence Day is fixed at July 4, but in 2026 July 4 falls on a Saturday, so the observed holiday — and the day this calculator excludes from business-day counts — is Friday, July 3, 2026.
Worked example: starting from a Friday and adding 5 business days skips that weekend and the next, landing exactly one calendar week later on the following Friday (assuming no holiday falls in between) — 5 business days always equals exactly one business week when no holiday intervenes.
The 11 holidays recognized are New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday of January), Presidents Day (3rd Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (1st Monday of September), Columbus Day (2nd Monday of October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (4th Thursday of November) and Christmas Day (December 25).

When a fixed-date federal holiday (like Independence Day or Christmas) falls on a Saturday, it is observed the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday. For example, July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, July 3, 2026.
Can I use this as a court date or legal deadline calculator?
Yes. The "add/subtract business days" mode is designed for deadlines that must skip weekends and holidays, such as court filing deadlines or "N business days" notice periods. Always confirm the exact rule with the relevant court or contract, since some deadlines count calendar days instead.
Should I count the end date when calculating days between two dates?
It depends on the context. This calculator lets you toggle whether the end date is included, since some deadlines are inclusive ("within 10 business days, including the last day") and others are not.
